You are absolutely right about our SME. We need to rethink monetization of tech solutions for that layer. We provided a dollar based messaging and collaboration solution to a company and this year, they don’t want to renew subscription. I can’t blame them, the cost was almost doubled by exchange rate.
Even Naira denominated solutions struggle because we adopted the Western model for monetization. We should look at how our commerce really works, it is funded by informal credit within the value chain. A guy who owes will not be thinking of spending. Those at the top of a value chain can invest in these solutions then it can be provided free down the chain.
I have a model in development now, I call it “IgboCloud”. It is simply where the community pays for cloud based solutions instead of individuals. That is the way it has worked for centuries but…..we ape Silicon Valley.
